Can we talk about eating out with kids for a second? Because it can either be one of the best parts of a family trip or a full sensory event that ends with someone crying in the parking lot. (No judgment. We have all been there.)
Asheville is genuinely one of the best food cities in the Southeast, but when you are traveling with little ones, “best food city” can feel a little overwhelming. Do they have a kids menu? Is it loud enough that a meltdown won’t turn every head in the room? Can the dog join? Can we actually get seated before someone’s hunger crosses into dangerous territory?
These are the real questions. And as someone who photographs families all over Asheville and Western North Carolina, I have heard every version of this concern. So here is a no-fluff, honest guide to five Asheville restaurants that families genuinely love, and why each one works when you have kids in tow.
1. Sunny Point Cafe (West Asheville)
Sunny Point is a West Asheville staple for breakfast and lunch, and families keep coming back for a reason. The kids menu comes with crayons, the food is made from scratch with local ingredients, and the outdoor garden out front is basically a built-in activity while you wait for a table. (And yes, there usually is a wait, but the garden makes it actually enjoyable rather than a countdown to disaster.)
The carrot hotcakes are legendary. High chairs and booster seats are available. Counter service means food comes out efficiently, which, when you have a hungry four-year-old, is basically a superpower.
Best for: Breakfast and brunch with kids of any age. Budget some extra time and lean into the garden wait.
2. Luella’s Bar-B-Que (North Asheville)
Barbecue is one of those magic family foods because almost everyone likes something on the menu, portions are generous, and the whole vibe is casual and unpretentious. The North Asheville location of Luella’s is especially great for families because it sits right next to Weaver Park, which has a playground and open green space. You can eat outside, let the kids run off some energy after the meal, and genuinely feel like a functioning human adult again.
The smoked meats are the real deal, and the sides are the kind of Southern comfort food that makes you want to move here.
Best for: Lunch or early dinner with active kids who need to move around after eating. Combine with playground time at Weaver Park.
3. S&W Market (Downtown Asheville)
Food halls are one of the great inventions of modern family travel, and S&W Market is Asheville’s best. It is housed in a stunning Art Deco building right downtown, and the whole setup eliminates the single biggest source of stress at family meals: the negotiation over what to order.
One parent wants tacos. One kid only eats pizza right now. The other will only consider something involving a hot dog. At S&W, everyone just gets what they actually want from different vendors and meets at a table. There is also The Hop ice cream right inside, which makes for the world’s most convenient dessert situation.
Best for: Families with picky eaters or wildly different taste preferences. Also great when you want to be downtown without committing to a single restaurant.
4. Asheville Pizza and Brewing (North Asheville)
This one is a full event, not just a meal. Asheville Pizza and Brewing’s North Asheville location has a movie theater with $3 dine-in movies, plus an arcade room with air hockey, skee-ball, and classic games. The pizza is solid, the prices are reasonable, and the whole place is loud enough that no one is going to notice your toddler’s opinions about their crust.
It is independently owned, been around since 1998, and has that fun, unpretentious energy that makes kids feel totally at home. If you want to eat somewhere the kids will talk about for the rest of the trip, this is it.
Best for: Rainy days, dinner with older kids and tweens, or any night when you want the restaurant to double as entertainment.
5. White Duck Taco Shop
White Duck has multiple locations around Asheville (downtown, River Arts District, and South Asheville), and all of them have that easygoing, artsy, Asheville energy that makes you feel like you are doing the trip right. The tacos are creative and genuinely delicious, there are kid-friendly options alongside the more adventurous combinations, and the outdoor seating gives kids room to breathe.
The chips and queso situation here is also worth calling out specifically because it is a universally accepted crowd-pleaser that buys you about seven minutes of peaceful eating. Strategic ordering.
Best for: Lunch or a casual dinner. Multiple locations means it is almost always convenient wherever you are in the city.
One More Thing Before You Go
Asheville is a city that genuinely welcomes families. You do not have to sacrifice good food just because you have kids with you. These five spots are proof of that.
And if you are visiting Asheville with your family and you want to make the trip extra memorable with some mountain family portraits while you are here, I would love to connect. There is truly no better backdrop than these Blue Ridge Mountains, and I promise the session will be way more fun than trying to get everyone to smile for a selfie at a restaurant.
