If you’ve been following along here for a while, you know that Asheville has my whole heart. I’ve been visiting and photographing families in these mountains across every single season over the past few years, and I genuinely never get tired of it. Spring brings that soft, almost dreamy green. Summer is lush and full. Fall is absolutely unreal with color. And winter has this quiet, moody magic that I think is totally underrated. The landscape here shifts so dramatically throughout the year, and that is exactly what makes Asheville family photos so special. No two sessions ever really look the same.
Whether you’re a local family looking for a fresh backdrop or you’re visiting Asheville and want to bring home something more than just vacation snapshots, I’ve got you covered. Here are my favorite spots for outdoor family portraits in Asheville, NC, broken down by what’ll cost you and what’s completely free.
These spots require an admission fee or a special permit, but trust me, they are worth every penny for the variety and beauty they bring to your family photos.
If you haven’t been, Biltmore Estate is one of those places that genuinely takes your breath away every time!! The 8,000-acre property gives us so much to work with: sweeping mountain views, manicured gardens, the lagoon, the conservatory, gorgeous open lawns with the iconic house in the background. I’ve shot here in every season and the variety never stops. Fall foliage here is stunning, but honestly spring when the gardens are blooming might be my personal favorite. It’s a ticketed attraction, so keep in mind that your photographer will need access as well. This is one of the most searched Asheville family photography locations for a reason, and it really is that good.
Located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway about 20 minutes south of downtown, the NC Arboretum is one of those spots that works for absolutley every family. It’s accessible, parking is easy, and the grounds are beautifully maintained year-round. There’s a vehicle fee to enter (typically $10-$20), but the variety of backdrops you get, the quilted garden, open green spaces, hardscaped walkways, and mountain views peeking through the trees, makes it such a versatile spot for family portraits. I especially love it for families with younger kids because there’s a lot to explore without a serious hike involved.
This one is a little more seasonal but oh my goodness is it worth it!! Flower farms are having a serious moment in family photography right now, and for good reason. The color, the texture, the pure joy on kids’ faces when they’re running through flowers, it photographs in the most natural, candid way. Availability is limited and it books up fast, so if you’re planning a session here, plan ahead.
Some of my most favorite sessions have happened at completely free spots. Asheville is truly spoiled when it comes to public land that is absolutley gorgeous.
This is the one I keep coming back to, over and over. The Blue Ridge Parkway winds right through Asheville and the surrounding mountains, and there are countless pull-offs and overlooks that make for jaw-dropping backdrops for family photos. I’ve been out here in the middle of summer when everything is a deep, rich green, and I’ve been out in peak fall when the whole ridge looks like it’s on fire with color. The light at golden hour along the Parkway is something I genuinely get emotional about. It’s free, it’s accessible, and it never looks the same twice. Blue Ridge Parkway family photos are some of the most requested sessions I offer, and it’s easy to see why.
Okay, this one requires a bit of a drive (about 45 minutes from downtown Asheville along the Parkway) and a short hike up to the bald, but the payoff is incredible!! You get 360-degree mountain views, wild rhododendrons, tall grass, and this rustic open shelter that photographs beautifully. This is not the spot for very young toddlers or families with mobility concerns, as the hike has some incline and rocky terrain, but for adventurous families it is truly unforgettable. I’ve been up there in the summer when it feels like you’re above the clouds, and it never gets old.
Speaking of mountain balds, Max Patch is arguably the most iconic outdoor portrait location near Asheville, and I will never stop recommending it. It’s about an hour’s drive and a manageable hike to the open summit, and what you get is this vast, open, grassy bald with panoramic views in every direction. It’s pure Western North Carolina at its most cinematic. Sunrise and sunset sessions here are somthing families talk about for years. If you’re visiting Asheville and only have time for one outdoor location, make it this one.
For families who want something a little more urban-meets-nature, Carrier Park along the French Broad River is a hidden gem. It’s free, it’s central, and the river, open fields, and tree canopy give you a surprisingly wide range of looks without ever leaving the city. This is one of my go-to spots for families who don’t want to drive far or aren’t up for a hike but still want something that feels natural and candid rather than overly posed.
Don’t sleep on downtown Asheville for family photos!! The River Arts District has incredible murals, textured brick walls, and this cool, creative energy that photographs in the most vibrant way. Pack Square Park gives you a classic downtown feel with open green space. The architecture throughout downtown Asheville, especially in the historic neighborhoods, brings in color and character that you just can’t replicate in nature. Urban family sessions work especially well for families who want somthing a little different, or for those visiting Asheville specifically to soak in the city’s art and culture scene. It tells a story about where you were and what Asheville meant to you, which I think is really the whole point of family photos in the first place.
Every season in Asheville brings something different, and I always encourage families to lean into whatever time of year they’re here rather than waiting for “perfect” conditions. I’ve had sessions in the early spring mist that looked absolutely ethereal. I’ve had fall sessions with peak foliage that made people cry when they saw their gallery. Asheville is stunning in every season, you just have to show up for it.
If you’re planning a family session in Asheville, NC and want help choosing the right location for your family’s vibe and comfort level, I’m always happy to talk through options. Every family is different, and the best location is the one that feels right for you.
