Most photographers recommend scheduling your maternity session somewhere between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. That window tends to be the sweet spot for a few reasons. Your belly is full and beautifully round by this point, which is usually what people picture when they think of maternity photos. You are still comfortable enough to move around, try different poses, and spend an hour or two on your feet or on the ground without it being miserable. And practically speaking, you have enough cushion before your due date that if the baby decides to make an early appearance, you will still have had your session.
That said, every pregnancy is different. Some people feel great and look exactly how they hoped at 28 weeks. Others are not quite there yet and would rather wait until 32 or 33. Trust how you feel in your body more than a number on a calendar.

Scheduling before 28 weeks is absolutely possible, and some people prefer it, especially if they run warmer, get uncomfortable quickly, or have a job or lifestyle that makes moving around more difficult later in pregnancy. Earlier sessions tend to have a softer, more subtle belly, which some people love and others find frustrating when they flip through the gallery. If you have a clear vision for what you want your photos to look like, that can help guide whether earlier or later is right for you.

Waiting past 36 weeks starts to introduce a few risks. Physically, late pregnancy can make getting up and down, holding positions, and being on your feet for extended periods genuinely exhausting. There is also the logistical reality that babies do not always cooperate with due dates. Scheduling a session at 37 or 38 weeks leaves very little room if the baby comes early or if something comes up with your health that requires bed rest. Most photographers, myself included, recommend having your session wrapped up by 35 weeks at the latest just to give everyone some breathing room.

Here is the part people consistently underestimate: booking and scheduling are two different things. Even if your session is at 32 weeks, you should reach out to your photographer well before that, ideally in your first or second trimester.
Good photographers book out, sometimes months in advance. If you wait until you are 30 weeks to start looking, you may find that the photographers you love do not have availability during your ideal window. Reaching out early does not mean you have to have everything figured out. It just means you get to actually choose, rather than take whatever is left.

I offer both maternity and newborn sessions in Asheville and surrounding areas, indoors and out, and I’d be happy to help you think through what timing makes sense for your specific situation!
