If you have spent any time around Asheville in October, you already know why people plan entire trips around it. The Blue Ridge in the fall is not subtle. It is all-caps, pull-over-the-car, why-does-nobody-talk-about-this beautiful. And naturally, a lot of families want portraits in the middle of all of it.
What catches people off guard is how fast the calendar fills up. If fall family portraits have crossed your mind even once, here is what is helpful to know before you start reaching out to photographers.
One of the most interesting things about fall foliage in the Asheville area is that it unfolds in waves rather than all at once. Because the Blue Ridge Mountains span a wide range of elevations, different areas peak at different times across several weeks.
According to Explore Asheville’s fall color reports, the highest elevations, spots like Craggy Gardens and the upper stretches of the Blue Ridge Parkway, tend to start turning in early October. By mid-October the color has moved into the 4,000-5,000 foot range. The valleys around Asheville, Weaverville, Black Mountain, and Hendersonville typically peak in the third and fourth weeks of October, and color can linger in lower elevations into early November.
So there is a real window here, which is great news. The catch is that photographers can only fit so many sessions into that window, and demand during this season is high.

A few things happen at the same time that make October a uniquely competitive month for booking. Asheville draws a large number of visitors specifically for fall foliage, which means visiting families are looking for sessions alongside local families. Golden hour also arrives earlier in fall, which shrinks the number of usable evening time slots per day. And there are really only so many prime weekends in October to begin with.
The result is that October weekends tend to fill up well before the season starts, sometimes months ahead. Families who reach out in early October often find that the dates they had in mind are already taken.

Most photographers in the Asheville area open their fall calendars sometime in late spring or early summer. Reaching out in May, June, or July gives you the best shot at getting your preferred date and location. August is still workable. By September the options start narrowing, especially for weekends.
It can feel strange to be thinking about fall sessions when summer is still in full swing. But the families who end up with the dates and spots they wanted are almost always the ones who reached out earlier than felt necessary.

The Blue Ridge Parkway alone has over 270 overlooks, and a lot of them are within a short drive of Asheville. Locations like Craggy Gardens offer wide open balds with long-range mountain views. The NC Arboretum and areas around Weaverville catch beautiful warm light as the leaves change. Even spots closer to town take on a completely different character in October.
For families visiting Asheville in the fall, it is the kind of backdrop that makes you wish you had planned a session before you arrived. For local families, it is right in your backyard and genuinely worth taking advantage of.
